How It Works

How Net Metering Works in Florida

Net metering is the system that makes Florida solar economical for homeowners. Here's the full flow, in plain English:

  1. Solar Generates

Your panels produce more power than your home is using during sunny midday hours.

  2. Excess Goes to the Grid

The extra electricity flows back through your meter onto the local utility grid.

  3. Utility Credits Account

Your utility company tracks every kWh you send back and credits it to your account.

  4. Credits Offset Future Bills

When you draw power from the grid (at night, on cloudy days), credits cover that usage first.

  5. Annual True-Up

Once a year, your utility reconciles your account — most Florida solar homes net out close to zero.

Florida Utilities

Net Metering Across Florida's Major Utilities

Each Florida utility has slightly different net metering rules. We handle the specifics for whichever provider serves your address.

TECO (Tampa Electric)

Serves Hillsborough and parts of surrounding counties. Net metering credits roll month-to-month at retail rate, with an annual true-up that pays out remaining credits at avoided-cost rate.

Duke Energy Florida

Covers Pinellas, Pasco, and large parts of Central Florida. Excess generation is credited monthly at the full retail rate and applied to your next bill automatically.

FPL (Florida Power & Light)

Florida's largest utility, serving most of the east coast and Southwest Florida. Credits roll over month to month at retail rate; an annual true-up handles any remaining surplus.

LCEC (Lee County Electric Cooperative)

Serves Cape Coral, Sanibel, and parts of Lee, Hendry, Collier, and Charlotte counties. Net metering is offered with monthly rollover and an annual true-up.

Lakeland Electric

Municipal utility serving Lakeland and the surrounding area. Net metering is available with credits applied to future bills under their published interconnection rules.

Net metering rules and rates are set by each individual utility and can change. We'll confirm your utility's current terms during your free consultation.

FAQ

Net Metering Questions Answered

Do I get a check for the energy I send back?

Almost never. Net metering works on credits, not cash. Excess kWh you send to the grid become credits that reduce your future bills. At the annual true-up, most Florida solar homes have used most of their credits — only a small surplus (if any) gets paid out, and at a lower wholesale rate.

What happens at night when my panels aren't producing?

You pull power from the grid like any other home. Your utility bill that month uses up some of the credits you banked during sunny hours. That's the whole idea of net metering — your credits cover your nighttime and cloudy-day usage, so over a year your bill nets out very low.

Will I have a $0 electric bill?

Most Florida solar homes still have a small monthly utility charge — usually a fixed customer/connection fee of $10–$25 depending on your utility. Net metering offsets your energy charges, but those base fees still apply because you're still connected to the grid.

Is net metering at risk of being changed in Florida?

Florida's net metering rules have been debated in Tallahassee for several years. Today the rules are still in place across the major utilities — and existing solar customers are typically grandfathered into the rules they enrolled under. The sooner you go solar, the more likely you are to lock in current terms.
